People have asked how things are in Tel Aviv, these troubled days. I tried to provide a partial answer in the piece that I wrote below for The Times of Israel blog. After it was completed, Hamas announced that they were going to fire at Tel Aviv at 9 p.m. this evening (similar to the way that the Israeli army warns people in Gaza to leave their homes that are being targeted). Well, true to their word, Hamas fired 7 rockets, all of which were intercepted.
Down in the building’s shelter — the one time I went down there since this round of violence started — my right-wing neighbor Michael, who served as an Israeli military attaché in Washington totally dismisses the Hamas capacity to hurt Tel Aviv. He says that though they have missiles that can reach Tel Aviv, they don’t have serious warheads that can cause damage, unless it falls right on your head (or I added on a gas station, like happened in the south).
Incidentally, Michael went to the all-day Israel Conference on Peace on Tuesday, organized by Haaretz, that I describe in the article, and he was very impressed. His wife warned him that if he begins moving left, the family will disown him.

And now TV announces that all the Tel Aviv cafes are once again filled with people, waiting for the game between Holland and Brazil for 3rd place in the World Cup. This links to my Times of Israel piece: http://blogs.timesofisrael. com/war-and-peace-in-tel-aviv/
