Partners for Progressive Israel is profoundly dismayed by the United States Senate’s confirmation of former governor Mike Huckabee, a radical Southern Baptist minister, as the next ambassador to Israel. Over the past decade, we have witnessed the Republican Party veer sharply away from its former support for a two-state Israel-Palestine policy: Minister Huckabee is deeply implicated in this dangerous process, encouraging his party to back unbridled Israeli settlement activity in the Occupied Territories, and to reject the very existence of a Palestinian people.
The people of Israel and Palestine alike are human beings entitled to security, opportunity, prosperity, freedom, and peace. They are not — notwithstanding the teachings of the more extreme Christian Zionists, such as Minister Huckabee — instruments in an End Times theology. At a time of growing fear and hatred in the Land, the confirmation of Mike Huckabee, who admires the most self-destructive forces in Israeli society, sends a terrible message to everyone who dwells between the Mediterranean Sea and Jordan River.
