May 24th, 2024 – Partners for Progressive Israel wishes to express our support of the nations of Ireland, Spain, and Norway in their commitment to recognize a Palestinian state as of May 28th, 2024. These nations join over 140 countries – two thirds of the United Nations – including several of their European neighbors. PPI has long supported the recognition of a Palestinian state alongside a secure and democratic Israel – indeed, as we have called for over 30 years for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, we have always understood that this necessitates an end to the Occupation of the Palestinian Territories and international support for and recognition of Palestinian self-determination.
Furthermore, we encourage the Biden Administration and our American Jewish community to express their support for this positive political movement in the long-term pursuit for a two-state solution in the region, one that allows for freedom, self-determination, and security for both Israelis and Palestinians.
“Recognition of a Palestinian state is neither a condemnation of Israel, nor a ‘reward’ for Hamas after the terror attacks of October 7th,” said Rabbi Margo Hughes-Robinson, PPI’s Executive Director. “Rather, this is a recognition of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, and a historic step towards a political solution for peace for all Israelis and Palestinians: one marked by diplomacy and lasting security instead of an ongoing war that has been characterized by mass death and human rights abuses. We continue to seek an immediate bilateral ceasefire, a return of the hostages, and a real peace for all people living in the region.”
