The liberal Israeli journalist Akiva Eldar mostly writes in Haaretz, but he’s also recently become a contributor for the fascinating cross-national Mideast news site, Al-Monitor. (Eldar is someone who has met with Partners for Progressive Israel on occasion, both in Israel and in the US.)
In this Al-Monitor article (dated Aug. 28), “Is there a place for Jews in future Palestinian state?,” he surely has the intent of facilitating a two-state solution, rather than to express sympathy for the settlements, which he powerfully critiqued in Lords of The Land (co-authored with Prof. Idith Zertal and published in the US by Nation Books). Eldar writes the following, in a mock combative tone:
if I were Abbas, I would be announcing today that Palestine will welcome its Jewish residents with open arms, a willing heart and equal rights. This, on the condition that the state of Israel welcomes with open arms, a willing heart and equal rights its Palestinian residents. Anyone have a problem with that?
