Assault on the Judiciary Inside Netanyahu’s Plan to Establish and Dominate an Illiberal Israel
In recent weeks, tens of thousands of Israelis have taken to the streets to protest Prime Minister Netanyahu’s plan to overturn Israel’s form of government: To undo the separation of powers, end judicial oversight, and remove any remaining checks and balances that limit his power, and that of the Israeli rightwing. With Israeli resisters describing this as no less than an “autocoup”, Netanyahu’s designs have elicited comparisons to Orbán’s Hungary, Erdoğan’s Turkey, even Putin’s Russia. On Thursday, February 9, 2023 at 12:30pm US Eastern Time, we were joined by a panel of experts who will explain the nuts-and-bolts of Netanyahu’s so-called “judicial reform” and also explored how the changes would serve as a cornerstone for the Israeli right’s broader agenda, both inside Israel and in the Occupied Territory: - Dr. Hassan Jabareen, founder and general director of Adalah - The Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel - Adv. Talia Sasson, formerly a senior official in Israel’s State Attorney’s office, and the author of the “Sasson Report” on illegal West Bank outposts - Adv. Emily Schaeffer Omer-Man (moderator), Israeli human rights attorney and litigator, formerly part of the Michael Sfard Law Office.
