Since its inception in 2006, the Israeli-Palestinian Joint Memorial Day Ceremony has challenged the traditional narrative of “competing victimhood,” seeking instead to bring Israelis and Palestinians together to acknowledge the pain and the aspirations of the “other side.” Fifteen years later, the Ceremony’s impact is greater than ever, with 200,000 people tuning in live to last year’s event. On Wednesday, April 7, we were joined by representatives of the two organizations that produce this important event -— Galia Galili of Combatants for Peace and Layla Alshekh of Parents Circle - Families Forum. Galia and Layla took us behind the scenes and discussed how the ceremony got started, the obstacles created by the Israeli government, the threats from the Israeli right, the delicate give-and-take between Israeli and Palestinian planners, and more.
