Avshalom Vilan was a founding member of the Israeli organization, Shalom Achshav (Peace Now) in 1978. He is a member of Kibbutz Negba (near the Gaza Strip), a former elected head of the National (Artzi) Kibbutz Federation, and a Meretz party Member of Knesset  from 1999 until 2009.  Abu (as he is affectionately known) is also a frequent guest speaker on the Partners for Progressive Israel annual symposium in Israel.
